Making Queer History

Overview

Making Queer History has a vague title because it has a rather vague purpose. We are not alone in our aim to tell the queer community’s history. What defines us is our focus not only on the past, but toward the future.

Role

Communications Specialist

Brand Strategy, Visual Design, Copyediting, Social media marketing

Vision

We will work to give you information about our community’s past and resources to help in making our community’s future a brighter one. So if you can, become a patron to help us continue this work. Learning queer history is great, but making queer history is far greater.

Background

Making Queer History was founded by Laura Darling in March 2016. While every article and podcast episode begins with the sharing of knowledge about queer people/events throughout history, most of them end by bringing it back to the now. Because we are working not only to teach people about our history but to bring that history into terms relevant to the present in a segment fondly referred to as “the moral of the story”. Whether we talk about intersectionality, the revolution in just being happy, or reacting to global events, we always work to make the history relevant to your day-to-day life.

Articles & Podcast

Each month, Making Queer History covers three new queer people from history through written articles.

At the same time, the podcast takes a second look at a previously covered figure.

Engagement

Making Queer History has several ways to engage, several of which were created by Dean Strauss:

  • Guest Authors. A curated library of queer stories written by queer authors outside of Making Queer History.

  • Foster a Library. Research materials voted upon and approved by Making Queer History members.

  • Art Contest. A monthly art competition yielding dozens of entries per month and winners across mediums including fine art, film, music, and more.

  • Queering Up History. A series of illustrated portraits of figures from throughout queer history.

  • MQH Now. An interview series with queer creators and activists making queer history today.
